CAM popularity is worldwide and it is growing. Standard care is what medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and allied health professionals use. Alternative medicine means treatments that you use instead of standard ones. Complementary means nonstandard treatments that you use along with standard ones. CAM is a broad term that covers a range of healing therapies, including chiropractic.

  • Back pain is the most common reason Americans use complementary and alternative medicine. Chiropractic care is one of the alternative medical methods often used.
  • American women in midlife, between 45 and 57 years, are the primary users of CAM.
  • Chiropractic ranks as number one in treatment for back pain. Chiropractic care is one the top 3 CAM treatments Americans choose for their overall health management.
  • Consumers are increasingly using alternative care to address current ailments and improve overall health. People are spending their own money for chiropractic and other forms of alternative care, and are becoming more responsible for choosing which care is most appropriate for them. Studies suggest there are strong signals that Medical doctors are no longer the dictators of health; they are just another team member.
  • Some hospitals and doctors are now supplementing their regular medical care with alternative techniques.
  • People often turn to CAM when they have a long-lasting problem that conventional medicine hasn’t completely cured. For instance, if they continue to get headaches each month and they don’t want to take medicine or they have taken prescriptions and it hasn’t helped (or presented unfavorable side effects).
