At Rettay Chiropractic, we belie e that everyone can benefit from exercise. That is the right type and amount of exercise. Inappropriate exercise can actually be a detriment.

Many people do not know where to begin for a correct exercise program. They do not know if they should make a long=term commitment to health club or pay for a personal trainer. How much is too much? Will exercise hurt my back? What is the best way to lose weight? These are all valid questions, and the answers are different for each patient.

The whole process of stepping into the unknown and beginning an exercise program can be intimidating. Because improper exercise can be more harmful than helpful, we like to help our patients through this process.

Our first step in this process is to educate the patient on the specific benefits of exercise. These include but are not limited to:

» stress reduction » weight loss » cardiovascular health
» increased energy » improved sleep » better muscle tone
» improved blood pressure » higher self-esteem » flexibility
» better concentration » less depression » decreased joint pain

For our interested patients(and potential patients) we talk about what specific health goals they wish to achieve. Then as health care providers, we can determine what type of activity or exercise is most beneficial and safe for that individual patient. We encourage our patients to set reasonable and achievable goals, and support their efforts in every way possible. As in everything else we do, our ultimate goal is to improve the health of every patient.

» Am I too old and out of shape to even begin to exercise?
Our philosophy is that every person can get a benefit from some form of physical activity. Obviously there are extreme examples where careful monitoring of a person’s physical activity is needed; therefore, we assess all of our patients to determine what limitations they may have.
» I know I need to exercise but I can’t afford a health club membership or a personal trainer and anyway I don’t have the time so what can I do?
We don’t expect our patients to have unlimited time, motivation, and financial resources to exercise. Our goal is to teach inexpensive, enjoyable, and time efficient activities that will have a significant health benefit.
» I’ve never worked out before where do I begin?
Step one is deciding what you want to achieve (weight loss, increased muscle tone, cardiovascular health, stress reduction, etc.). Based on your current physical condition and goals, we can recommend a good starting routine for you. This can be adjusted as you progress or your goals change. Our approach is to educate you on FIT concepts and the components of fitness, with a focus positive and supportive encouragement.
» Do you believe there is a good way to lose weight without exercise?
No, most health care providers will tell you that an increase in activity level is a key component of long term weight loss.
» What is the minimum amount of exercise you would recommend for someone who does not have a lot of time: and has never exercised before?
Our goal is to try to get our patients spending about 20 minutes, three times a week participating in some activity such as walking.
» My knees and other joints are so bad it even hurts to walk. What can I do?
There are many forms of exercise, such as water aerobics, that are easy on joints. We will work with you to find a method of exercising that works with your current physical condition.
