The first step in becoming a chiropractor is to attend an undergraduate college and meet certain requirements in prerequisite courses. The potential doctor of chiropractic then applies to one of about twenty accredited chiropractic colleges and begins a program of between 2700-3200 credit hours.
These programs include academic courses in various topics such as biology, anatomy, philosophy, nutrition and medical terminology as well as practical work in areas such as physical examination, diagnostic imaging, case management, and chiropractic technique. As his/her education progresses, they will begin an internship program and see actual patients in a controlled clinical environment. Most students complete their chiropractic education in four to six years. Then they begin the licensing process.
There are two parts to the process a chiropractor goes thru to receive a chiropractic license. After receiving their degree, the first step is thru the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. This is a progressive four part testing process that involves academic tests as well as practical exams and demonstration of clinical competency.
Each part must be passed before the student can apply for the next part. After the successful completion of the final part IV test, the chiropractor is eligible to apply for a license in individual status. Each state may have additional educational or testing requirement to complete. Once a chiropractor is licensed, he or she is required to obtain to competed yearly continuing education hours.
